Let's start with the good. What a beautiful printed book. Glossy pages, indicate color illustrations. You don't see many books like this.I'm sorry to say that's the end of the good part. I'm a scientist, a biologist of a particular type. I love all sorts of books about nature. Worms, ants, spiders, snakes, it doesn't matter. But in a book for the general public, there needs to be some skill as an engaging writer. The writing here is as dry and dull as that of a scientific manuscript. In fact, it reads more like a review with some opinion added than a novel. The continuous reference to honeybees as Apis mellifera, frequently 3-4 times on a single page, is a testament to the writing style. Textbook-like. There is a claim in the description (the main reason o purchased the book) that "Seeley presents an entirely new approach to beekeeping―Darwinian Beekeeping―which enables honey bees to use the toolkit of survival skills their species has acquired over the past thirty million years, and to evolve solutions to the new challenges they face today." But only in the last two pages, and only in theory. The book finishes with more than 50 pages of footnotes, citations, and credits. Overall, o found out to be disappointing and unsatisfying, despite the author's obvious knowledge and enthusiasm for this work.
My mother is a beekeeper and told me that she wanted this book but couldn't find it. It was on Amazon and I ordered it for her. She's thrilled with it.
Will give you an entirely new perspective view of bees and beekeeping. You wouldn't think about honey bees the same after reading it.
Very informative book on wild honey bees and how they survive without human interference.
Dr Seeley keeps his fingers on the pulse of current honeybee research, and his eyes and ears focused on the behavioral eccentricities of the hive. He is uniquely qualified to challenge us all to consider ways of partnering with the ever amazing Apis mellifera.
